Best London food news of the year so far. Farmstand meals & snacks are now available from Planet Organic Stores. Why is this such a great thing? Start day-dreaming about food & read on.
I first reviewed Farmstand shortly after it opened in 2016 in Covent Garden, attracted simply because it was new and 100% gluten-free. It immediately became one of my favourite eateries in London. Since then lots of others have been similarly impressed. It is now in the top 10% for London on TripAdvisor. Reviewers from TimeOut, Squaremeal and Pebble loved it. My favourite *that nails it quote* comes from the Pebble Review in reference to the thousands of possible menu combinations:
“No matter which way you choose, you end up with a rainbow of goodness”
Farmstand, what is to Love?
Farmstand serves up fantastic fresh, flavorsome food, that is also 100% gluten and refined sugar free with many vegetarian and vegan options. It does so with ethical business practices including sustainable and local sourcing. For example, you won’t find any bottled water for sale here, instead you will find excellent stainless steel reusable bottles for sale together with free filter water on tap.
The particular hook for me is that Farmstand make the same healthy, wholesome, fresh & flavoursome food that I make for myself. They just, you know, make it *for* me. That makes it even better.
The Farmstand buffet style menu means that your chosen combination of mains, sides and extras is on a tray (or carry out) and you are enjoying it within minutes. That is *assuming* you can make your choice of the silly number of menu combinations possible (52,000?) swiftly.
However I have always had one problem with Farmstand. Namely, there is only *one* of it and that *one* it is too far from where I live and work! Farmstand has become available via Deliveroo for those that live proximate to Covent Garden. I do not.
So the most welcome food news of the year is that a tiny slice of the Farmstand food range is now available from Planet Organic Stores. Planet Organic already carry many of the brands I appreciate and Farmstand is a great fit alongside them. The biggest win though is that there are more places from which to pick up the Farmstand food. Below are my impressions from sampling one the main, side & breakfast or dessert pots on offer. Below that are in-store snaps of the rest of the range.
Mushroom Pasta Salad Box with Artichokes & Squash
My first bite was of artichoke. Artichoke offers a rich hit of that lesser known fifth taste, the gorgeous umami. If you do not know umami yet, get to know it, you just might adore it. Brothy, meaty, satiating. This umami rich bite of artichoke also had a smokey flavour. I was *utterly* won over.
Aside from the utterly umami smoky artichoke the remainder of the dish was well seasoned, with firm & succulent butternut squash together with fresh vegetal rocket & brown rice pasta. An olive oil, lemon juice, dijon mustard & apple cider vinegar dressing brought all the flavours into vibrant life.
Of the three ‘mains’ this is the only current vegetarian option and does contain egg yolk. Price is £5.50
Buckwheat Tabbouleh Pot
Cucumbers provide the crunch. The combination of dressing and mix of fennel, parsley & thyme provide the zesty, zingy flavour that enlivens each mouthful of the naturally nutty buckwheat. I will be shamelessly copying the seasoning mix for my home use.
This one contains no animal products so is vegan friendly 🙂 Price is £3.50
Coconut Yogurt with Gluten-Free Granola
Nothing could really go wrong here. Is the Coconut Yogurt rich & velvety on the tongue? Yes. Does the granola have a generous mix of nuts, seeds & fruit? Check. Does the creaminess go well with the crunchiness & nuttiness? Of course!
This being Farmstand, all the containers are fully recyclable & all the ingredients sourced from UK suppliers. Price is £2.99
Rest of the Range
The rest of the range is pictured below, to be devoured at a later date. Have you tried any? Will you? Share your impressions too. If you have not tried these yet, I am willing to stake (or build!) my foodie reputation upon them. Try them and tell me 🙂
