Do you love food? Do you or someone you eat with have an allergy or intolerance? If yes to both then you really should get to know the Free From Food Awards! Following the Awards and looking out for the Commended, Highly Commended and Winner badges offers a wonderful way to discover delicious new foods that are also safe to eat.
For the second year I am delighted to be among the taste-testing judges. The panels are composed of nutritionists, chefs, food technologists, free from entrepreneurs and industry folk, bloggers and more for a diverse range of perspectives. Judging considers not only the appearance, aroma, taste, texture of foods but also their free from credentials, innovation and nutritional virtues.
So when you see this badge, treat yourself!
This year for the first time ever there is an exciting new “No Top 14” category for products that are free from all 14 major allergens including gluten, eggs, milk, peanuts, nuts and soy. I like to call it Free 14! Viva the free from revolution! Overthrow the allergens! Banish them! Begone! Ahem . . . so the following are my favorite picks from the products within this along with two sauces from a “Peanut and Tree Nut Free” category.
I hope these products do as well as they deserve in the Awards but highlight the following are my opinions only! To learn about other 2017 entrants and the glorious winners follow the Free From Food Awards on Facebook and Twitter. A shortlist of the 2017 entrants will be published on 8th February and Awards announced on Tuesday 28 March.
Why I loved it– Initial al dente texture gave way to a pleasing softness and the very mildly nutty, natural flavor of chickpeas. More protein than pasta made with egg and tasty enough to enjoy with just a sprinkling of olive oil. Just two ingredients, chickpeas and water!
Buy it from – Sainsbury, Asda, Waitrose, Ocado and Wholefoods!
Why I loved it – Great compliment for the Chickpea Fusilli! Very simple ingredient list and a subtle but enjoyable umami flavor fit to be slowly savored.
Buy it from – Lots and lots of places!
Why I loved it – Not cheap but a great innovation and gift idea. There are good free from mixes out there but these are free from all 14 allergens and come with everything, absolutely everything, to make delicious, moist muffins together with the rich, indulgent cream topping. If you are an occasional baker only, this is the foolproof kit to get!

Why I loved it – I adore falafel but my scale of adoration recognizes falafel from passable to okay through to good and world class. This is the *world class* type and I absolutely state that there is *no* better pre-prepared falafel in the world. To get any better you would need to be buying freshly made falafel by a master, probably from a street-food vendor somewhere in the middle east.
Buy it from – Nowhere! Yet! This is intolerable. Should become available by 01 March latest from Good Food & Gifts in a 1kg tub. Trust me, once you try it, you will want lots. Send hopes and wishes via Facebook and Twitter to tell them to hurry up and deliver!
Why I loved it – The flavor was a compelling three act story which I enjoyed reading very much! Initial sweetness quickly gave way to a teasingly complex range of tastes and the departure left a long lingering chilli heat at the back of the palette.
Buy it from – Uh oh, another nowhere . . . yet, but *should* become available from Wingyipstore by 01 March latest
With huge thanks to the Free From Food Awards organisers, I have even more judging yet to enjoy this year. More discoveries incoming!
