Goed Eten is a tiny café in the Hague with a thoroughly wholesome menu featuring lots of gluten free and vegan options. Goed Eten simply means Good Food in English. Is it good? Healthy? Tasty? Prepared with love?
Goed Eten had an initial life as a retail deli with a focus on healthy foods. In 2017 Goed Eten reopened as a healthy food diner, take out and Deliveroo caterer. Goed Eten has a self declared purpose to make healthy and organic food available to all. I like this! All places to eat should have a purpose.
During a business trip to The Hague I became determined to visit Goed Eten. My determination rose in spite of Goed Eten being in an awkward place to visit. Goed Eten is located in a sleepy residential area some distance from the Hague centre. Two features compelled me to make sure I found my way there. The first is that Goed Eten is one of the rare Dutch eateries to have an online menu, in english which makes clear that there are gluten free and vegan dishes. Hurrah! The second is that those dishes are a combination of what I suspected was delicious and very wholesome. Lots of fresh organic veggies, lots of fibre, lots of variety.
Spoiler alert! I happily found a third reason to visit upon arrival. You can see that third reason in the picture below! Spoiler – it isn’t the mineral water.
Goed Eten for the Gluten Free Diner
The regular menu features 12 gluten free dishes and the same number of vegan dishes. Many of these are both gluten free and vegan together. In addition to soup the combination gluten free and vegan dishes are a diverse range of hearty salads and rice bowls. These dishes are inspired by various countries such as the North African Ras Le Hanout salad with dates and yogurt mint sauce and a Surinamese Saoto soup.
Gluten free and vegan dishes alone are rare enough. Finding a place with as many as a dozen dishes that are gluten free and vegan and organic is a marvel. I think of London as the capital city of the food universe but I would welcome more places like Goed Eten to it.
There are also beef and veggie burgers on the menu. Everything other than the buns they are served in is gluten free. There are many sandwich wraps and again only the wraps themselves contain gluten. However there are no gluten free buns or wraps available. This is a shame. Goed Eten has tried having gluten free breads available and found that there was insufficient demand. The gluten free bread cost extra but was not requested and as it passed best before dates had to be disposed. The burgers can be ordered without the buns.
As with any venue that does handle gluten Goed Eten does not offer a “guarantee” that dishes are gluten free. However they are confident to prepare food without cross contamination & I felt safe and relaxed. This includes the meals prepared for Deliveroo. See the Deliveroo information below.
Goed Eten Gluten Free Dishes
Okay, I mentioned I found a third reason to visit upon arrival. That was the unexpected discovery of gluten free carrot cake. This wasn’t on the menu! There are a few desserts that I will always sample when I find them. Carrot Cake, Pecan Pie, Scones. I consider it a solemn responsibility to evaluate these critically and report on them earnestly. Goed Eten doesn’t prepare their own desserts but do always have one gluten free dessert option which they buy in. I was very pleased to see it was covered and that a separate serving slice was being used to serve it.
I chose two small salads thinking I would be able to munch my way through both and enjoy the variety. My first was a real hit. A Ras el Hanout salad provided my first experience of having chopped dates with salad. The dates, lentils and yogurt dressing combined into gorgeously creamy, chewy bites with pockets of sweetness. I am now replicating this at home!
My second “Beany Sprout” salad consisted of fresh, crispy bean sprouts, marinated cashew nuts, broccoli, coleslaw, lettuce and an “Asian dressing”. The marinated nuts and dressing infused the fresh greens and sprouts with wonderful flavour.
Now the carrot cake. This was very different to any I have enjoyed before. It was very dense and even fudge-like. Completely different from a conventional cake. I believe it was made with lots of dates and walnuts. Generous but not overpowering cardamom, cloves and cinnamon delivered a wonderful warm and lingering spice rich aftertaste.
Goed Eten Recommendation
For cheap but fantastically healthy, gluten free and vegan eats there is no place I can recommend more highly than Goed Eten. I double down on this recommendation for anyone seeking the convenience of food delivery.
The value for money is superb considering the quality of the food. At just 5 EUR per small salad I expected to need least two plus my coveted carrot cake to feel full. I was entirely mistaken! After eating one small salad and carrot cake I could not even begin to eat my second salad! This was noticed by the busy but kind and attentive server and I was quickly offered the option to convert my second salad into a take out. Nice touch.
