If supermarket free from aisles could talk and were honest they might confess that most of their contents were, just perhaps, not so great nutritionally. Terrific as treats. Wonderful to have as options. Super as a showcase for the many creative ways that refined starches and added sugars can be shaped into edible food like objects. Raw Gorilla Crispies & Munchies are arrive inside packets but have virtues that place them many worlds part from most free from packaged foods. Can they be happily be built into a gluten free & vegan diet focused on whole, natural, diverse and nutrient rich foods?
Starting with a roll call, Raw Gorilla virtues include:
- Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegan & Paleo friendly
- Great Taste Award winning
- Organic & nutritionally varied ingredients including buckwheat, seeds, nuts, fruits and novel foods like baobab, lucuma & maca
- Activated seeds and nuts for improved nutrient availability
- Modestly sweetened
- All kept raw with the intent of retaining nutrients
- Recyclable packaging
But are Raw Gorilla goodies also tasty and delicious? Let me ask you questions in return. Do you like CRISPispiness? Do you like CRUNCHiness? How about chewy & munchy, fruity moreishness? Yes to any? You need to meet Raw Gorilla!
Raw Gorilla Range
The Raw Gorilla range offers two very different sets of products, Crispies & Munchies. Of the Crispies, one product is so very different to the others it deserves entirely separate consideration.
The Crispies are comparable to a trail mix, snack mix, cereal or granola. You could eat them as a cereal in a bowl of plant milk or yogurt. They work just as well mixed in with fresh fruit, drizzled with oil or eaten naked, just as they are.
The Munchies are cute and curious. They come in little packs of buttons. If they were squeezed together into say, a rectangle shape, they would be a snack bar. They would look rather like the uber popular Nakd Bars. They would offer a heck of a lot more diverse nutrition however.
Here is the best recommendation I can possibly offer of the Raw Gorilla range. I enjoy taste testing many things as a Free From Food Awards judge and foodie blogger. I write with honest opinions and always buy the things I taste test. Rarely however do I incorporate any free from products into my regular whole and low processed foods, plant based diet. What do I eat instead? Take a look at some of my typical meals.
After taste testing the Raw Gorilla range has secured for itself a full kitchen cupboard shelf and addition to my Ocado favourites. I am happy to be eating Raw Gorilla almost daily.
Raw Gorilla Crispies
Are you a sucker, smoosher, chewer or cruncher? These are differing food texture preferences. Together with taste and aroma texture or mouthfeel contributes enormously to food pleasure. I am an incurable appetite of CRUNCH. Raw Gorilla Crispies satiate that appetite so very, very well.
The Crispie ingredients are buckwheat, coconut flakes, seeds, nuts and dried fruits. Buckwheat kernels & seeds deliver the lighter, crispier side of crunch. Bigger seeds, nuts and occasional granola like clusters provide deeper and more satisfying crunchiness.
So enjoyable is the texture of the Raw Gorilla Crispies that I recommend eating them dry as a trail mix to appreciate them fully. The creaminess of milk and yogurt both dial down the crisp and the crunch. I cannot explain the food chemistry but the most delightful combination I stumbled across was Crispies lightly drizzled with MCT oil. Oh my, this is wonderful to eat.
What about the rest of the flavour? The experience begins with a heady, fruity aroma on opening new packets. The Original, Rawberry, Strawberry and Cacao Crispies all have just right, goldilocks, levels of sweetness and fruity or cacao flavor to be distinctive and delicious.
Raw Gorilla Munchies
Munchies are made from buckwheat, dates, seeds, nuts and other fruits combined with some ‘superfood’ type ingredients like maca, baobab and lucuma.
Whereas Crispies give great Crunch the Munchies are all about chewiness and charismatic flavours. Credit to the Raw Gorilla team for inventing some great combinations of simple and more adventurous ingredients.
But which are the best?
Lemon & Chia. Oh wow. My stand out favourite. The Lemon & Lucuma combination gives simply luscious aroma and flavour. This is a a new flavor combo right up there with salt & caramel, chocolate & peanut butter, apple & cinnamon. Did Raw Gorilla make this first? I am crediting them!
Cacao & Lucuma. Close second to the Lemon & Lucuma. It is not the raw cacao nor the Lucuma. It is the fantastic figginess. Raw Gorilla, rename these! They are the Fig & Lucuma!
Maca & Cinnamon. Probably the most superfood rich of all Munchies. Just enough sweetness from the fruits to balance the earthiness and bitterness from the buckwheat, maca and cinnamon.
Raw Carob & Orange. Somewhat denser and chunkier than others and that is a very good thing if you like something convincingly chewy. Gentle but enjoyable carob orangey flavour.
Apricot & Baobab. Oh no! I was hopeful these would be another flavour combo hit hit but can only rate these as nice. The Apricot & Baobab just were not punchy enough for me to love these rather than like them. No objections if they find their way into my snack drawer though.
Just as for the Crispies I stumbled across something which enhanced enjoyment of the Munchies. I opened a packet and froze the buttons before eating them. Eaten straight from the freezer they are extra super chewy but eventually yield and the flavour still shines through. Munchies plus freezer time equals extra chewy goodness!
Raw Gorilla Mighty Muesli
One Raw Gorilla is not like the rest. Raw Gorilla Mighty Muesli is designed as a fully paleo and keto friendly muesli. The buckwheat is banished. Mighty Muesli instead is a mix of seeds, nuts, coconut and cacao nibs. No added sugar at all. Each 100 grams has 20 grams protein, 50 grams ‘healthy’ fats and fewer than 10 grams of carbohydrate. This does offer a very keto and paleo friendly cereal or trail mix.
Raw Gorilla Interview
The Raw Gorilla team are awfully friendly Gorillas. They blog about the things they believe in and share their stories. They post pretty pictures. Alongside being active on social media they also make frequent appearances at big free from events like the Allergy & Free From Show. So it was with no fear that I approached one of the Gorilla’s for an interview.
Benjamin. They both come in boxes but Raw Gorilla ingredients are worlds apart from those found in cheap, sugary, ultra-processed cereals. How much of a challenge is it to have potential buyers appreciate the huge difference?
Raw Gorilla. Yes we have taken an innovator market leader position so there is definitely an education challenge to meet. But customers are becoming more savvy. Less trusting of what brands say with headlines. More people are beginning to look a bit deeper into what makes up their food.
Being mindful and questioning about food is certainly true of those following a vegan, paleo or ketogenic diet. However we also have evidence that all consumers are starting to understand far more about cheap ingredients and refined products and how these may not be as healthy as the more expensive but also nutritiously rich choices.
Benjamin. What delighted me above all with Raw Gorilla products are the textures. Crispies are compellingly Crispy and Crunchy and the munchies convincingly Chewy. All with capital C’s. Were these textures a priority within product design?
Raw Gorilla. Yes. Fraser our founder wanted a healthy alternative to fondly recalled childhood breakfasts of Coco pops. The challenge was to make them gluten free, full of healthy raw ingredients and keep them crunchy. Not letting them turn into mush when mylk was added!
Benjamin. In another universe the Munchies might take on the appearance of a snack bar. Why did they arrive in our universe as little buttons instead?
Raw Gorilla Ha! Well they stand out of buttons! They are very convenient and sometimes we just want to graze and come back to something. It feels easier with little rounds rather than a half eaten bar. They are also good for sharing! We have not eliminated that one day Raw Gorilla bars may emerge from the jungle.
Benjamin. Sprouting or ‘activating’ is a wonderful way to unlock nutrients but also rather demanding. Soak, wait, cold press or dehydrate. This must be really important to Raw Gorilla. Why is that?
Raw Gorilla Because anything over 42 degrees Celsius kills food! Sounds dramatic but its true, vitamins and minerals are destroyed with heat and even protein can have its structure changed at high temperatures. We believe that having raw food helps us get healthy and helps us meet our 5 a day targets.
Benjamin. Tigernuts, Maca, Lucuma & Baobab all make appearances within Raw Gorilla ingredients. What is the Raw Gorilla top tip for the next best novel food to look out for?
Raw Gorilla. Maqui berries. Maqui are loaded with antioxidants and not as sharp flavoured as Goji berries
Benjamin. Combining probiotics with prebiotic fibre, like Munchies do, is a way to potentially help bacteria spend longer in the gut and have a positive impact. What is the intent behind inclusion of probiotics within Munchies?
Raw Gorilla. Healthy tums and digestive systems. Eating ‘ good’ bacteria helps maintain the balance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract. They are also really good for the immune system which of course helps fight illness.
Thanks Raw Gorilla! See you soon!
