Yorica! is a fantastic place to go for a dizzyingly decadent range of gluten-free and dairy-free ice creams, yogurts and shakes.
Free-From food at its very best is simply great food that can be enjoyed by as many people as possible *including* those needing or choosing to avoid allergens. For desserts and treats Yorica! absolutely nails this. I challenge anyone, not only fellow gluten-free and dairy-free people, to sample the delicious ice creams and toppings and not find them delightful.
So go for an afternoon treat or if you are eating out in Soho go here after wherever you are eating your main meal in order to be absolutely spoiled for choice.
Yorica! Free-From Credentials
Safety is as-good-as-it-gets thanks to the complete absence of allergens, other than soy, in their kitchen environment. So no wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs or nuts. All but two of the ice creams and most of the toppings are free from all 14 major allergens. At time of writing the Wow Butter and Cookies & Cream ice creams and many of the dry toppings contain Soy. The toppings containing soy are clearly indicated within the Yorica menu online
Yorica! An Impossibly High Number of Desserts!
Eating out gluten-free (GF) and dairy-free (DF) in London has completely transformed in recent years. There are many restaurants and menus offering great variety for the GF and DF diner. However even restaurants with a great main menu will often have very few or even one GF and DF dessert offering, such as a sorbet. It is rare for the GF / DF diner to have a difficult choice to make between dessert options. More likely it is simply a question of whether we want that one safe dessert, or not?
At Yorica! we have a real tyranny of choice. Yorica! offers rice milk based ice creams, rice milk based shakes with coconut cream and frozen yogurts as the ‘mains’ and an incredible range of toppings – sprinkles, fruits, sauces and ‘dry’ toppings like cookies, marshmallows, gummy bears and tiffin brownies. I defy anyone to calculate how many actual dessert combinations this allows for. It is a very, very large number. Think about grains of sand on all the beaches of the world big.
Look, feast the eyes!
Yorica! How It Works
First you choose between Ice Cream, Fro-Yo and a Shake. Lets say you choose ice cream, next steps are:
Step 1: Choose a tub size
Step 2: Choose your ice cream, or ice creams
Step 3: Choose your toppings
Step 4: Watch your magnificent choices come together in a tub of loveliness, then devour contents of said tub
To experience as many different flavours and toppings as possible I hit upon the wonderful idea of having two small tubs of ice cream instead of one large. What I discovered to delight is that Yorica! offers sample spoons of their ice creams, alleviating the terrible tyranny of choice.
I did however stick to my plan.
So I had WowButter (peanut flavour, peanut free) and Chocolate Orange ice creams with Chocolate Tiffin Brownie topping in one bowl and Lychee and Blackcurrant ice creams with Pomegranate topping in a second. In my excitement I did not take close ups, but they are well presented by my server Gaia here.
The rice milk used the ice creams provides a blank canvass which helps the flavourings really shine through. Each ice cream delivered the expected flavour rather than just generic sweetness. In contrast to nut and coconut based ice creams there was also no competing influence on taste. The texture of all ice creams was of pleasing, smooth creaminess and the Tiffin Brownie topping provided a wonderfully contrasting crunch.
Along with the sample spoonfuls another really nice thing I experienced was Lucas the manager noticing that my second bowl was melting whilst I was eating my first and offering to keep it chilled in a freezer until I was ready.
Yorica! Extra Credits
All the ice cream is prepared in a tiny basement kitchen with barely enough space to swing a cookie sandwich biscuit (definitely not an Oreo, no!) but this does not prevent the magic of experimentation producing new flavours to offer upstairs.
Use of organic ingredients wherever practical is part of Yorica!’s sourcing approach, something I like a lot because of the diverse range of benefits that organic farming offers in contrast to conventional farming.
Finally, something super secret squirrel. Imagine a world in which instead of Yorica ice creams being just in one place, the ice creams travelled, as if by magic. Imagine them being in other places to greet and welcome you. Imagine this hard enough and you never know, it might come true . . . follow Yorica! on Twitter or Instagram to be the first to know
