Apres Food Co. doubles as a cafe serving delicious fresh prepared food and living evidence for the food philosophies of the owners. Apres founders Danny and Catherine believe that comforting, healthy food can and should also be simply delicious! Are they right? How compelling is their evidence? Does the evidence include cake? I investigate.
Apres Food Co. Comfort, Style & Service
During my visits Apres has always been full of fellow diners. Rush periods often put stress on service but the Apres servers appear relentlessly cheery and helpful. Perhaps they love where they work? They certainly appear to and it shows. I present a barrage of questions on initial visits to new places. What dishes contain X? What can I modify? How is cross-contamination managed? What are the ingredients in this and that and the other? All such were answered capably and with smiles.
The interior is small and cosy and feels like a contemporary home kitchen replete with pot plants, tiled floors and real wood fixtures. Thanks to a long slim layout even at the peak times this is a suitable place to chat with friends and family. Not too noisy nor too crowded. There are USB charging points by many of the tables. Great idea! All the better for recharging your phone so you can take and Instagram pictures of the lovely food. Probably.
Apres Food Co. Free From
All food and drinks are 100% Gluten Free. The online and in-house menus identify vegetarian options of which there are many. Other allergen-free options are not directly marked but Danny (the Manager) confirms both will and skill to cater free from any allergen including nuts and peanuts.
On my first visit I indicated an intolerance to dairy in addition to being coeliac. When I asked to modify the Vegetarian Full English so that it was without dairy I was immediately offered suggestions for several things to replace it. Better yet, when my dining partner ordered ice cream dessert I was warned that this contained dairy ‘just in case’ I was tempted to try it! I would have been. This kind of fantastic attentiveness allows comfort and confidence.
Apres Food Co. Food
Most of the food at Apres is prepared fresh on site. In a place that has such passion for food I always ask for recommendations. From the brunch menu I was recommended the Apres home prepared baked beans (two days in the making!) and award winning bread made using their own special gluten free flour blend. I enjoyed both within a Veggie Full English complete with avocado slices, mixed greens and crushed tomatoes. A better Veggie Full English would be difficult to find.
Many of the dishes are simple rather than adventurous. The beauty is in how well prepared they are along with the provenance, quality, flavor and relaxed dining experience.
Apres Food Co. Dessert
Apres Food Co. is another venue I need to enlist into my plan to have all eateries include their desserts on their regular menu or have on display. Restaurants, cafes, listen up! Some of us want to know how much appetite to reserve for dessert! Let me solve this dilemma for you though. If you are eating at Apres, leave plenty of room. There will be dessert. It will not be fruit. Nor sorbet. Instead you shall have choice of freshly made cakes and puddings of the day. You will find it difficult to choose.
To resolve the tyranny of choice I took a recommendation for Sticky Toffee Cake. There was no regret. Marvellously moist, succulent, sticky and with treacle sweetness. Worth doing those extra 30 minutes in the gym for! Well, you know, 30 minutes at least three times.
Apres Food Co. Recommendation
Yes, I love it. I do not love the location, which happens to be one of the trickier parts of central-ish London to reach. It is tribute to the destination that I keep on making the trip.
I would chose Apres as a destination to pick to impress visiting friends and relatives. I happily stake my foodie reputation on suggesting a visit. As with the very best of places the food is first of all simply great and the 100% gluten free credential means it is wonderfully safe too. Friendly service, smiles and welcomes and a light and airy kitchen diner feel to the environment compliment everything else. No wonder Apres recently won a Free From Eating Out Award Gold.
This is a special place run by passionate people. Look out for an incoming interview with Danny the co-founder in the very near future.
