Mommi dazzles with compelling and charismatic Japanese Peruvian cuisine served in comfort and jazzy style. For any diner there is a wonderful experience on offer at Mommi thanks to incredible food flavours, textures and plating all delivered with passion. Do not view their Instagram feed whilst hungry!
For the gluten-free diner Mommi deserves to be a top 10 destination restaurant to visit in London. Why? That wonderful dining experience is paired with superb gluten free safety thanks to the entire Mommi food menu being Gluten Free. Perhaps Mommi should simply be at the very top of your list since it was the overall winner of the 2017 Free From Eating Out Awards!
Within this write up I cover the dining experience from the main menu but Mommi has a diverse range of other attractions too.
Fridays and Saturdays feature live music from late evening with free admission. Gin Lover? There is a Pick n Mix Gin List to explore. Searching for Sunday Roast? There is a 24 hour Braised Suckling Pig for meat lovers but also a full vegan Smoked Aubergine based option. Mommi also offers a set price Weekend Brunch with ‘Bottomless Bubbles’, yes, unlimited prosecco! So pick your own reason to visit!
Comfort and Style at Mommi
London has many places serving great food but I find that many of these do not have a great environment to match. I particularly find that open plan venues with hard furnishings and small tables can make for noisy, cramped places to eat. So whenever I eat in a place where the environment enhances the experience and supports socializing I find it deserving of mention.
Mommi has one of the most stylish, social and relaxing environments I have enjoyed dining in. Lighting is intimate. Decor exudes style & panache. Seats are actually comfortable. There is a wonderful variety of table and seating arrangements suited to dining solo, as a couple or in a group. Horseshoe shaped booths in particular are perfect for group dining, sharing plates and conversation.
At the back of the restaurant there is an amazing picture and photo feature wall with two seater tables that appear ideal for couples. I suspect this is also part of the area that is cleared when the live music is on late Fridays and Saturdays.
Mommi Gluten Free Greatness
The Mommi food menu is entirely gluten free! I can delight at having played a small role in this being so. Friends introduced me to Mommi several years ago. It showed a lot of promise given the mostly naturally gluten free cuisine and clear desire to cater gluten free. However my first visits were impacted by concerns about gluten-free safety and these prompted me to provide feedback and challenge in the hope of improvement.
The response from Mommi Head Chef and Manager was stand out phenomenal. Not only were specific issues agreed and addressed but a journey was begun towards converting Mommi to the present day entirely gluten free kitchen and menu.
Today it is huge credit to what the team have achieved that Mommi is the overall Free From Eating Out Awards Winner of 2017. To win this award means that Mommi thoroughly impressed judges with safety and service and fantastic food. All Award Winners are good, many are great, some are excellent. To win the overall against very strong competition is simply amazing.
Mommi Dairy Free & Beyond
Mommi also has a dedicated dairy free menu. Remarkably, this is basically the complete main menu with each dish modified, where needed, to be dairy free. Mommi are also keen to accommodate diners needing to avoid other allergens even if this means ordering completely off menu. This is commendable and opens up Mommi to families and groups who need to manage multiple restrictions.
Furthermore Mommi is one of the first restaurants to sign up to the amazing new and upcoming Eat Safe app which enables users to see exactly which dishes are free from whichever allergens they specify. Eat Safe is currently in an early beta stage but already looking like a game changing app and map for free from diners.
Mommi Japanese Peruvian Cuisine
Cuisine at Mommi is Japanese Peruvian. Rather than being a new ‘fusion’ this is cuisine developed by the Japanese immigrant population to Peru beginning from the 1800s. This is referred to as ‘Nikkei’ which is the Japanese word for emigrants and their descendents. Broadly this means Japanese ideas and cooking methods and Peruvian ingredients. Food & Wine.com have a great article explaining this and the Mommi Menu does the rest!
Within the main menu there is a choice between one of four ‘set menus’ each comprising multiple small plates ideal for sharing. One of these is a full veggie set menu. However if you are not tempted by these you can simply order whichever plates appeal most a la carte.
Dining at Mommi and sharing plates is very much like enjoying a ‘tasting menu’ offered by many fine dining restaurants. This is a terrific way to enjoy and explore food. A few bites of many different things means that the tastes, flavours and textures continue to surprise and delight.
Mommi Food, Marvelous Food!
Fellow blogger & Eating Out Awards judge Sian over at Gluten Free Globetrekker had this to say about just one menu option.
“Tempura Battered Fish & Chips is reason alone to visit Mommi. Light & crunchy batter and wasabi mayo so deliciously hot & creamy I think we scooped out every last morsel from the dish”
How could I not try this? The Nikkei Fish & Chips arrives as several cuts of battered fish so that like all other dishes it is ready for for sharing. Or . . . . not sharing! Flavourome chili, refreshing lemon, succulent fish and crunchy batter make this a contender for best gluten free fish & chips in London. That is another post I now need to prepare. I will conduct diligent research of course!
Here I also sampled the most wonderful marinated mushrooms that have ever graced a plate. Accompanied by eggplant and zucchini with similar virtues, every mouth wateringly tasty mushroom was something to attend weeks of mindful eating training and practice to appreciate fully. I tried my best to hide them from my fellow diners but fear my expression of foodie delight gave them away.
So which dish was the most difficult to share? That brings me to dessert. I recently declared Leadbelly’s to have the Best Gluten Free Cheesecake in London. I stand by that but now qualify it as the best New York style Cheesecake. This so I can declare that Mommi has the most amazing alternative Cheesecake. Why so good? Flavours and textures. Crunchy crumbled almonds decorate a top layer of luxuriously rich cream cheese. Underneath this is something like a ganache of passion fruit and terrifically tart yuzu fruit. Gather your spoonful well and you have the amazing flavours of the fruits, rich indulgence of the mouth coating creaminess and rewarding crunch of the almonds. Divine but be warned, order one for yourself. Not suitable for sharing!
Quite an amazing venue. Do you like great food? Visit Mommi at least once. It is that simple. Be put at ease by the gluten free safety. Feel welcomed and engaged by the friendly and passionate staff. Relax in comfort and admire the interior design style. Treasure the gastronomic delights.
Is there any room at all for improvement? Scarcely. It would be great to have more than the current single dairy free dessert option. This is a trio of ice creams which I suspect is the gorgeous Booja Booja. For beer drinkers it might be nice to have more than just the one gluten free bottled beer from Brewdog. Personally I would like to see some amazing mocktails to accompanything the amazing cocktails. Think of these things as twirly decorations on the icing on the cake though. Mommi is marvelous just as it is.
