Paladar Restauarant – Latin American – London 100% Gluten Free
Paladar is a creative Latin American cuisine restaurant in South London. 100% gluten free and veggie friendly food served in a ‘secret garden’ and with a menu featuring a dessert platter? Count me in for a review.
Paladar – Comfort, Style & Service
There are three very different settings within the restaurant. There is a very fancy, elegant and well lit function room looking into their kitchen, a main dining room decorated with some beautiful art and a’secret garden’. The art is actually a rotating exhibition with different pieces being cycled in to showcase Latin american artists. Love it.
If you want to dine in the garden, and I recommend yes whenever the weather is bearable, make sure to make a reservation and request it!
The Paladar team are some of the most friendly and enthusiastic I have had the pleasure to be served by. I like to always ask what my server would recommend and then assess how much passion they have as they respond. At Paladar, rather a lot. People that love food are often good people. I particularly enjoyed having a debate about the relative ranking of guava and kumquats within the worlds most tasty fruits with our lead server. He was wrong, kumquats are higher, but I respect his opinion!
Paladar – Food & Drink
Drinks menu includes the must have Chile and Peruvian national drink Pisco Sour and my alcohol imbibing friends tell me this is a great place to sample it. Food menu is relatively short and simple. There are nibbles and main dishes from farm, sea and land, with the last being the veggie dishes. Most dishes are suitable for sharing if you like.
If you visit I think you simply must include an order of the green plantain crisps served with taquero guacamole. Taquero? Tomatillos and avocado with serrano chiles, onion, cilantro, and lime. One more tip! Try and keep some of these tall, twisty, proud crisps for scooping up bits of other dishes. At this they excel!
Everything I devoured at Paladar looked beautiful and had a charismatic flavour to match. My favourite, something I had not eaten before, was a gorgeous earthy red and brown palette of roast aubergine, fried beans with salsa negra & maya hummus. Cassava fritters with mora compote & guava sauce provided close competition.
Enough entrees. What of dessert? I marked Paladar down early for the crime of not including their desserts on the main menu. Let me plan dang it! I can however grant leniency since they do offer a dessert platter for sharing. Or maybe not sharing? It does not matter. They join the wonderful japanese-peruvian cuisine restaurant Mommi in Clapham and a tiny but hopefully growing little group of restaurants that offer this delight. Despite being somewhat full my dining companion and I went for it! No regrets! Enjoying a little bit of lots of things was such a treat for the senses.
Paladar – Recommendation
I am always delighted to add something new to my evergreen 100% Gluten Free in the UK map. However I look for a lot more in a restaurant than *only* being 100% gluten free. Are the people friendly? Is the venue a pleasant place to eat and chat? Does it have style and flair? Do I want to return soon to explore more of the menu?
To all the above I am giving a big positive yes for Paladar. In fact give me a choice between dining here and Mommi in Clapham, another 100% gluten free venue with highly distinctive cuisine and style and . . . . . and well I would reject the tyranny of choice! Paladar one night, Mommi the next! Win win.
I will be heartily recommending this as a destination restaurant. A place to plan to go to when in London. In addition to joining the 100% map it goes straight into my google list of cool and special places to eat gluten free in London. Check out the London Gluten Free Indie & Small Chains list and map.
