Wild Zucchinis is a charming & quirky cafe offering authentically healthy & tasty food while being veggie, vegan and gluten free friendly. Even within the outstanding culture and foodie hotspot that is the ancient market town of Cockermouth in Cumbria this place feels special. Special enough that if I could somehow pick this cafe up and move it to London I just might! Fortunately for locals and visitors my powers are insufficient for this magic trick. If Wild Zucchinis does ever vanish overnight that might indicate that a genie has granted me wishes . . .
Wild Zucchinis Comfort, Style & Service
Wild Zucchinis feels just like a friendly, comfortable front room enlivened by good conversation, coffee and food. A little noisy when deservedly popular but in a buzzy and lively way. The enigmatic owner Manon and her team are welcoming and friendly in a way that underscores that relaxing front room feel.
For those that read Michael Pollan, and those yet to read Michal Pollan, one of his most famous foodie quotes is writ large on a blackboard. Do not eat anything your grandmother would not recognize as food. Wild Zucchinis serves real food with a smile. If you are lucky you can occupy the one sofa and be served real food with a smile whilst lounging in a sofa.
Taking the chalk on blackboard a bit further are pithy Quotes of the Day. You might choose to reflect on their wisdom as you wrestle with the choice of what to enjoy from the menu, Wild Zucchinis is also dog friendly, pram friendly including via availability of high chairs, event and charity friendly and yes, just overall friendly.
Wild Zucchinis Free From
One regret . . . there is scarce indication on the Wild Zucchini website of the will and skill to cater allergen and gluten free. Nor do the printed menus on site identify their gluten free or dairy free dishes. However both will and skill are in abundance. I have been consistently assured and placed at ease thanks to staff knowledge of allergens in their dishes, which are safe and how to adapt and serve allergen free dishes. It helps that much of the Wild Zucchinis menu is naturally gluten-free and cross-contamination risk is carefully managed.
Wild Zucchinis Food & Drink
Somehow this magical little place appears to achieve the Goldilocks zone of offering ‘something for everyone’ within a blend of traditional British and Mediterranean cuisine. If you seek great gluten free, veggie or vegan food you will discover many and varied options. However meat eaters also have a mouth watering selection of burgers, bacon, sausage sandwiches and full English breakfasts. I cannot imagine the diner that would not be delighted by the range available.
Complimenting the good food prepared with love is an emphasis on locally produced, seasonal and organically grown produce. This is shown off exceedingly well via the salad bar. Many main meal dishes include three picks from the bar. Maybe Watercress, Banana, Mustard Seeds, Walnuts and Greek Yoghurt? Perhaps Carrot Ribbons with Pommegranate and an organic Elderflower dressing? Listen to your gut bacteria and opt for the wholesome Cauliflower, Garden Peas & Turnips with a light seasoning?
Fantastic choice extends through to drinks. Beers , wines, well made coffee, impressive range of teas, hot chocolate and smoothies. Smoothies, including dairy free, served in cute little glasses.
I do not believe there are any poor choices but if you take one recommendation, try the Sundried tomato cashew ‘cream cheese’ with pita breads (gluten free) Rich, dense, smooth & bursting with vibrant tomato, garlic and zingy lemon flavor. Simply gorgeous. None compare. I bought to share then begrudged every errant spoonful. As I write this I think I must ask Wild Zucchinis to share the recipe. Perhaps this entire review is simply flattery to encourage the release. Perhaps.
Wild Zucchinis Desserts!
Together with the markup of gluten and dairy free dishes on the printed and online menus this is an area that could be even better. There are many delicious looking cakes on display. On my visits just one among these has been gluten free. The main food menu is so varied and delicious that I barely mind and can also console myself with wonderful smoothies and cappuccinos. After all, what is a Peanut Butter, Banana and Maple Syrup smoothie except a liquid dessert?
More desserts would very literally be icing on the cake. Wild Zucchinis team, are you listening? Carrot cake please. With lots of icing! Please do not forget the walnuts.
Wild Zucchinis Recommendation
Gluten Free? Visit this place. Dairy Free? Go here. Vegan? You might just love it. Meat eater? There is plenty. Love food generally? Make this a destination! Appreciation for great food served by very cool people working for an ethical, sustainable, local society enriching enterprise? Pilgrimage here. If you are in Cockermouth there are other great places but . . . . visit here first. If you do, and you see Gluten Free Carrot Cake. Have a slice for me!
I am a lucky judge for the most excellent Free From Eating Out Awards and should Wild Zucchinis enter I am sure it would gather a Gold award and help populate the North!
